John H Reagan High School
Class Of 1969
Leave Our Name ALONE!!
So much has been going on since the start of the New Year!! Some “political correctness” fools are trying to rob our school of its name!! These few folks got together and have decided to change the history of our past!! They are trying to destroy history that has been around much longer than they have even been on this earth. Unfortunately, the current spineless school board does nothing to stop this madness, choosing the easy way out and just greasing the squeaky wheel instead!!
First of all a little history lesson!! Houston Heights High School was first established for residents of The Heights in 1904. The Old Heights High was originally at the corner of Yale and 12th. All grades of students attended this school; elementary, junior high and high school students. When the Heights became a part of the City of Houston in 1918 the building at the end of Heights Blvd became the High School and the junior high stayed in the old building. In 1924 the original building at Yale and 12th burned down and now the search was on for a new high school. A tract of land was purchased bounded by Oxford, Arlington, 13th and 14th streets. The new school opened in 1926 and was given the name of John H Reagan High School. The grand opening was a sight for all to see…the teachers and high school students all marched down Heights Blvd to the new school on 13th Street. The other building then became Hamilton Junior High.
A few of the well know people that attended John H Reagan were Red Adair a notable oil well fighter, Mary K Ash the founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, A. J. Foyt Sr. the father of the famous race car driver A. J. Foyt Jr, Richard “Racehorse” Haynes a criminal defense attorney, Everett “Squatty” Lyons a Harris County Commissioner, Dan Rather a journalist, Craig Reynolds of the Houston Astro fame and Martha Wong a Texas state representative just to name a few! Many, many more have passed through those doors, too many to name!! And now the name of our school is not good enough for future students (or actually for the bunch of protesters that are causing all the havoc/ruckus).
All of this because John H Reagan was the Postmaster General of the Confederate states!! Such a shame that some people have to be so racist that they cannot leave history in the past and move on! They want to blank out any reference to anything that does not make them “feel good”!!
Thank you to all who have tried to stop this ridiculous nonsense with your well spent hours! Just remember one thing; we the class of ’69 and all the thousands of other that have passed through these hallowed halls will always be
No one can ever take that away from us!!!!
This article is strictly the opinion of this editor. I just felt it was time for me to stand proudly on my soapbox and voice my opinion.
UPDATE: Reagan High School will be renamed Heights High!! If we cannot retain our old name, then our original name will be satisfactory!!
A FEW NEW CHANGES TO OUR WEBSITE
A few classmates from other classes have asked if there is any way they can be included in our website along with the Class of ’69 classmates! Yes, there has been the discussion to expand our list…so let’s do it. If you are a Reaganite and interested in becoming a part of our group please email me your name and year you graduated. Once you have done this I will gladly add you to our guest list and then you can click on your name and create your own profile page. Once you have created your profile you will have full access to the entire website as well as receiving all the info about any and all events we may have planned. We have always enjoyed each other’s company when we meet up at The Heights Group "get togethers", so it is time to share with all our friends no matter what year we graduated. Come on and sign up so we can share more memories together!! Pass the word on to other Reagan classmates.
Our prayers go out to the family and friends of another '69 class member who has lost her life. On July 30, 2016...Marie Anne Bolcerek (Anderson) left this world to continue her journey in heaven. Service are scheduled through the Brookside Funeral Home. Check out thier website for information.
We continue to keep Larry Eubanks and his family in our prayers. We ask that the doctors have the knowledge and understanding to care for Larry and keep him comfortable at this time.
Leona Faye (Martin) Neigut ask for prayer for her twin sister Kaye (Martin) Coukoulis. Kaye has been having health issues for quiet a while now and really needs the Prayer Warriors to add her to their list.
If anyone else would needs to be put on the Prayer List just email me to let me know.
update your information as it changes.
"Thoughts To Ponder"
Your kids are becoming you......but your grandchildren are perfect! Going out is good....Coming home is better! You forget names.... But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!! You realize you're never going to be really good at anything....especially golf. The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore. You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep". You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch. You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... ??? Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere!! You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!! What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody whispers. You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear. But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old Movies, and best of all: OLD FRIENDS!!
The Reunion Committee has asked that this request be posted.
